If you think high quality appliances aren’t in your budget, we have three words of good news for you: scratch and dent!

Scratch and dent appliances are those that have been damaged during shipping or in a warehouse. Sometimes the damage is so severe that buying them would be out of the question, but other times the scratches and dents may be so minor that they are barely detectable. The bottom line is that you will save money and update your kitchen with appliances you thought were out of reach for your wallet. And keep in mind, the bumps and bruises may not be on the appliances themselves, but on the packaging.

Sometimes the scratches, dings or dents are located where they would not be visible anyway, such as on the side of an appliance that fits into the cabinets, leaving no side open to view. Of course, you need to be sure that the imperfections do not affect the appliance’s function. That would not be a bargain at all!

Don’t worry that only basic models will be available in scratch and dent. You’ll find top of the line products with all the bells and whistles are also available in this not-to-be-missed category for the smart shopper. Looking for a range or cooktop? Don’t rule out the scratch in dent in all their fuel alternatives. You may even find the perfect outdoor appliance that has a few knicks but will make your outdoor kitchen the envy of the neighborhood.

Buying a scratch and dent appliance can save you up to 40 to 60 percent off the retail price, many times making it a smarter buy than its used counterpart. Some scratch and dent models even include a manufacturer-honored warranty.

Before buying any appliance, know what you’re looking for before you shop. Determine which features are most important to you and which ones you could do without. That way your decision will not be based only on the cost of a scratch and dent versus one that is in absolutely perfect visual condition.

While a scratch on the front of the appliance may completely rule it out, dents on the side may be okay with you, if they won’t be noticeable. However, cracks in glass panels or digital control panels should be a major warning sign to look at other products.

Don’t be put off by the term “scratch and dent.” It can be misleading. Scratch and dent? The real meaning can be huge savings!
